Being able to identify somebody's body language is an important part of an interview, as whilst the interviewee is saying one thing their body language towards you can say something completely different. Identifying somebody's body language can be split into five categories, that can help you to understand whether what they are saying is actually true or not.
The categories
Behavior - The physical behavior of someone that are observed during responses to a question, e.g., do they lean into the conversation? Are they open with you?
Eye contact - Do they maintain constant eye contact throughout? Do they show that they are listening to what's being asked to them?
Answer - Identify the answer itself, e.g. does the person use harsh or soft tones when they speak? Is the answer given direct or do they avoid giving a proper answer?
Timing - How long do they take to answer each question? Is it straight away or do they have to think first?
Voice characteristics - Does the person's voice go up or down in tone? Is their speech clear to understand?
Identifying an interview based on body language - Nina Metz to Jesse Eisenberg
All the way through this interview, Jesse doesn't maintain particularly good eye contact with the interviewer, as he tends to look away from the interviewer and towards the camera a lot. He tends to break away from the questions that the interviewer asks him, and start talking about other things that aren't to do with the interview. When the interviewer asks Jesse to show her a magic trick, she pulls out a deck of cards for him to use, he seems very surprised at her. He then insults her, nicknaming her the 'Carrot Top of interviewers' which upsets her. She attempt to brush the insult off by jokingly saying that 'i'm going to cry now', but Jesse tells her not to and that he doesn't want to be responsible for upsetting her. He asks her what she wants from him, and she tells him she wants the magic trick so she can leave, and he tells her that 'hey, your doing it on my time'.
After the interviewer tells Jesse that he was responsible for upsetting her, the tone of his voice changes to a much more sarcastic tone. He also sarcastically insults her at the start of the interview, telling her that she needs to write questions down on her hands so she can remember them. When performing the magic trick, Jesse asks the interviewer to pick a card and then place it back anywhere in the deck, and when she does he asks her to point out where she thinks the card is. She does, and he sarcastically insults her again, telling her that the card is definitely in the deck. All the way through the interview, he is very condescending and patronizing towards her, always making jokes about her interview techniques or sarcastically insulting her actions. Another interviewer does his own little analysis of the interview, and he states that 'i've interviewed Jesse Eisenberg many times myself, and he's very smart and fast and he always tries to set jokes up'. It does seem that Jesse was trying to go somewhere else with the 'Carrot Top' joke, but the interviewer immediately dismays it stating 'oh no, he [Carrot Top] is horrible' which shuts down the joke and makes whatever Jesse says next to look like an insult.
Putting the interview into catergories
