Identifying magazines based on target audience
Nuts
Title of the magazine – Nuts, which is clearly aimed at men as it’s a play on words. Short and catchy, will stick in people’s minds.
Typeface – The typography is mainly urban and gothic, one such type face written for rapper Professor Green has an urban feel to it. Particularly in the case of ‘Nuts’, the typeface is big and bold, this is to catch the attention of a passerby and make it stick in their minds. Some words tend to be abbreviated, as so to relate to a specific audience (in this case, teenage and young adult males).
Colour used – The colours are red and black, that are very much in the reader’s face and catch their attention. Red is seen as an aggressive colour, and when used in this context it keeps in your mind and stands out a lot.
Front cover – The pictures and text are very bright and big, designed to get the reader’s attention, e.g. there is most likely a half-naked woman on front. This image will clearly attract a male audience, as all of the things on the front page are big and bold. And the male population tend to relate more to something that’s ‘in your face’ and will really stand away.
Content – The content is mostly about females and girls and photoshoots, which clearly indicates that the magazine is based towards males. It doesn’t contain very much written information, as males don’t tend to read much on the written side. So they tend to include more images inside the magazine then words.
Offers – They will give offers to subscribers, that non-subscribers won’t be able to access. Sign up is usually via email. As far as special offers, Nuts magazine never had any special offers.
Mob Candy
Title – The title is a play on words, as if refers to the girls in the magazine being ‘eye candy’ so it encourages the readers to look at the pictures. The ‘mob’ part is to do with the fact that the magazine also promotes the typical ‘mafia’ lifestyle.
Typeface – The typeface is very blocky and big, and this is because it tends to want to be close up into your face. It wants to get the reader’s attention. The fonts remains the same pretty much all the way through, and the words aren’t space too far apart either meaning it’s easier for the reader to get the information and the intended purpose.
Colours used – The colours alternate between red, yellow and white. These colours are all associated with males and they tend to stick in the minds of male readers, which will make them remember the magazine and want to buy it the next time they see it. The colours fit the background of the magazine, and the colours used don’t contradict the background so the reader won’t be distracted away from the displayed information.
Front cover – As with nearly every ‘lads mag’, there is usually a half-naked woman on the front of the magazine. This is effective because the creators of the magazine know that males will be attracted to the magazine if there is an attractive lady on the front.
Content - The content of 'Mob Candy's to promoting the 'Mafia lifestyle' and has been created by people who come from a Mafia-style background.
Offers - Mob Candy may potentially have special offers, however they can only be accessed by people who have subscribed to the magazine and therefore only they can see the special content.
Maxim
Title - Maxim's title doesn't come from anywhere particularly special, it was actually created at the last minute by its creators. The title isn't a play on words from anything, it is simply just a plain title.
Typeface - Just like 'Mob Candy' and 'Nuts', Maxim has a very big and bold typeface and this is used to attract in readers (specifically male readers). Another effect of having a big typeface is that it is going to stand out among all the other magazines around it, meaning people who walk by the magazine will notice it and want to see what its about. Typically with their covers, Maxim will have their title behind the main picture, and this is effective because readers can still see the magazine's title, but they can also see the picture too.
Colours used - Depending on the particular issue, Maxim tends to use black, red and white as it's main colours. These are colours that have always been associated with men, and it helps if men can see a colour that they can associate with, and they are going to want to buy it much more. The colours also help the text to stand out, and it will grab the readers' attention.
Front cover - Keeping up with the style of 'lads mags', Maxim is most widely known for it's use of photography of women on its front covers. Obviously, the use of women on a magazine for men attracts the men towards the magazine, as they are more likely to buy a magazine with a almost naked attractive woman on the front then they are with other things. This selling point is always used on the front covers of magazines for men and that's why they sell so well.
Content - The main basis of the magazine is informing the reader about some of the world's most beautiful women. However, they also share more topical and non-sexual related topics, like 'how to find and buy neglected old cars', and '7 completely unnecessary movies coming to a theater near you'. The vast majority of the magazine's content is to do with women and cars, but they are still other topics that the magazine explores that are targeted at both male and females.
Offers - Maxim provide readers with a 'subscribers only' section, where people who have subscribed to the magazine get special offers and bonuses that only they can get access to. A yearly subscription to Maxim is around £19.97 (and its around £29.97 for a two-years subscription).
Music Tech
Title - The name 'Music Tech' easily gives away that the magazine is about music and the main purpose of the magazine is to inform the reader about the latest goings on in the world of music.
Typeface - As with most magazines, the typeface is big and bold and it grabs the attention of the reader so they'll want to read the magazine. Some of the words are a little too spaced out, and this can make it hard for someone who wants to read them as they might have eye sight problems. It makes use of using headings and subheadings, as most of the main titles are accompanied by a subheading that gives off some more information.
Colours used - The main colours used are red, black and yellow. As well as the colours appealing to men more, this sequence of colours is used a lot on other magazines. The creators of 'Music Tech' obviously performed some background research into popular colours used in magazines, and then decided to use red, yellow and black as their primary colours. Some of the colours used on the text tend to contradict with the colours used on the background pictures, and this can have a bad effect particularly if the reader has bad eye sight.
Front cover - The front cover is crammed with various different pieces of information about what's in the magazine. The background picture is a person sat working with several different bits of equipment, and this can show the reader more about what's going to be in the magazine itself. There are lots of headings, and these headings have their own subheadings that inform the reader about what's going to be in the magazine before they open to read it.
Content - Music Tech and their website 'Music Tech.net' are an integrated magazine that work together to bring their readers the latest trends, techniques, software and gear in the world of music.
Offers - On this particular issue, there is a 3GB portable compact disc that contains uncut percussion loops that can be sampled and used on other tracks. Music Tech themselves don't appear to have any offers, but they do advertise offers that other companies are doing.
Feel Good Food
Title - The title 'Feel Good Food' suggests that the magazine is about food, and that you can feel good when making the food. It's a provocative title, as it invites the reader in as its implied that they can feel good whilst making the food.
Typeface - The typeface on the title of the magazine is big and bold and this will allow the reader(s)/passerby to notice the magazine and they will want to read it. The text for most of the words are centered in the picture, and this tends to be based towards a more feminine audience as they tend to like words closer to the center of the page.
Colours used - The colours used are purple, white and a little bit of silver. These colours are most commonly used with magazines aimed towards a feminine audience, and this is because for generations women have been likened to associate more with something that has the colour purple on it. Therefore, if the colour of the main section of the text is purple then the female readers will associate with it more and want to read it more.
Front cover - The front cover features various different headings and subheadings that inform the reader about the different types of things that are in the magazine. They are very evenly spread between eachother so they aren't too close to the edge of the page. The headings are big and bold and will attract the reader in and make them want to read the content of the magazine.
Content - The magazine is about how to make your every-day food much better, and also to make it look good so people will want to eat your food. It has sections for both men and women, and is all to do with food.
Offers - The offers made by 'Feel Good Food' are only accessible through subscribing to the magazine. Its costs around £38.99 to subscribe to the magazine for a year (and it costs around £19.99 to subscribe for 6 months).
